Matthew Ryan Sharp emerges from reclusion with The Approachable Darkness, a culmination of his past year's work. On exhibition are grim portraits of our current state; generations chained to workstations, lazily dreaming of more money, more power, and more say, but too demotivated to take action. His characters represent the lethargies of this American life; clowns and corporate stiffs and the like in between. Using surfaces such as weathered woods and metals, and acrylic and spray paints as his mediums, he has created a series of work inspired by the desires, fears and vices of the average Joe. Encouraged by dissolution and union, hardship and camaraderie, Matthew consistently strives to develop new methods for creating his art. His metaphoric character concepts continue to evolve over time, as does his message and technique.
